Side Plate Resurfacing or Surface Grinding

Side plate surface finish, flatness and hardness are critical for the performance and reliability of a rotary engine.

Over the life span of a rotary engine the side, corner and oil seals wear a path into the working face of the side plates, leaving an uneven surface for new seals to travel and bed in. This can cause premature wear or breakage of seals and also prolonged run in time as sealing will not be optimal.

The maximum wear acceptable on a side plate surface is .0030"

Also over-tightening of the gearbox, front cover and water pump bolts can distort the mating surfaces and cause misalignment and added stresses on bearings and friction surfaces.

To rectify this the side plates can be resurfaced. A process where the plate is set up square on a surface grinder and precisely ground, taking only the minimal amount off the surface. Both sides of the plates are ground to eliminate any scoring or distortion and return the plate to a truly square and flat working surface.

All dowels and pins are removed prior and replaced after resurfacing.
Plate may need re-nitriding if surface grinding has been conducted before or wear grooves are beyond tolerances.

See Re-nitriding section of "Side plate resurfacing”.

A charge will be incurred if plates are not stripped, cleaned and gaskets or sealants removed prior to arrival at our workshop.
